Silver Linings & First Lines

During the holidays, it always occurs to me that while it’s difficult for everyone to get along, we are each other’s silver linings.

These are the beautiful clouds of yesterday afternoon taken from my windowsill. I have yet to catch a sunrise in 2011 but I imagine it will come soon enough. In the meantime, all is grace.

And the first book of 2011 is John Banville’s The Infinities which I found, hardbound for just a hundred bucks off a store that sells old knick-knacks and then some.

His first line is so beautiful: Of the things we fashioned for them that they might be comforted, dawn is the one that works.

Now that’s the way to usher in a new year.
